Volunteer with a Purpose

When disaster strikes, individuals are ready to volunteer for the cause. Volunteerism is an opportunity to give back and help a community in need.  FEMA works with various partners that lead with volunteering on the disaster scene, partners such as  American Red Cross, HandsOn Network and National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster  as well as FEMA’s own Community Emergency Response Teams.

Here are some tips when selecting a volunteer organization:

  • Contact and join an established nonprofit organization that will help to ensure you are properly trained before responding to a disaster.
  • Be safe. Do not self-deploy. Also do not deploy until a need has been identified and the community has requested support.
  • Be patient. Recovery is a long process that can take months or years after the disaster.
