The 12 Areas of Preparedness: Food

Power outages of several days or longer usually follow disasters. Power outages in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence left approximately 350,000 people without power, which hasn’t been restored at the time this article was written.  Having a stock of canned food, dry mixes, and other staples that do not require refrigeration, cooking or special preparation is vital to your family’s survival during the aftermath of a disaster.

FEMA recommends that everyone should consider the following things when putting together your emergency food supplies:

  • Store at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.
  • Choose foods your family will eat.
  • Remember any special dietary needs.
  • Avoid foods that will make you thirsty.

The following items are suggested when selecting emergency food supplies. You may already have many of these on hand.

  • Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, vegetables and a can opener
  • Protein or fruit bars
  • Dry cereal or granola
  • Peanut butter
  • Dried fruit
  • Canned juices
  • Non-perishable pasteurized milk
  • High energy foods
  • Food for infants
